I’m too fat. I’m too skinny. I’m too tall. I’m too short. My thighs are too big. Wait, my butt is too big. I wish my hair was a better texture. I always mess up on this! Shoot, can I ever get it right? The self destructive criticism goes on and on and on. Or have you ever thought to yourself, will I ever get it right? Or how come God made me like this? Well, you are not alone.
I’ve experienced these thoughts time and time again, and sometimes even now. God is so loving that despite our imperfections and our flaws, and the things that we constantly mess up on daily, He is still faithful. We are imperfectly perfect, so be proud of that.
In Kelly Balarie’s Battle Ready book, God uses her to remind us to take on a warrior mind-set in all areas of our lives. Most importantly, in the way we think about ourselves. Just like we can think our way down a negative mental rabbit hole, “no mind is too impossibly lost for Jesus” (Balarie, page 35, Battle Ready). We all battle the negative thoughts that the enemy tries to whisper to us in our minds and are challenged whether we’ll choose to believe them or not. We are literally fighting a battle for our minds.
The one thing I love about God is that He’s not expecting us to be perfect. You want to know why? Because He is the only perfect One. Growing up, I constantly found myself comparing myself to other people, whether it be at school, questioning why other kids got better test scores than me, comparing my worst with other peoples best, and also, comparing how I looked to other females. Have you been there? It’s not a fun place to be.
In Battle Ready, this very topic of self image destroying habits are addressed in a way where applicable scriptures are shared and point by point action steps are highlighted in detail in order to begin the healing process of getting set free from having a negative “MindPhone” (Balarie, pg. 32, Battle Ready), as Kelly Balarie calls it.
If you have ever struggled with a poor self image, insecurity, worrying about what other people think, feeling like you’re not worthy for God’s best, or feeling like you’re constantly in a spiritual battle, but are not prepared to fight, then Battle Ready is a MUST read.

“Failing to mind your mind does hurt you. I want you to consider this: if you have a phone but throw it out, it serves no purpose. If you get too busy to look at it, it won’t help you. If you place it on a shelf in your closet, it’ll collect dust. If you pay no attention to your MindPhone, it won’t do much” (Balarie, pg. 32, Battle Ready).
The one thing I love about God is that He constantly shows me the areas that are beautiful about me. He shows me how beautiful my brown skin is, how lovely my 4C hair is, how beautiful my full lips are, how unique my pigeon toed legs are. And the list can go on and on and on. That’s what I love about God. He loves me for who I am. Not for what I can do, not for my performance, but for who I am in Him. And that is exactly how He sees you!
Being Battle Ready in this spiritual battle is a choice. Kelly Balarie reminds us in the book that we should “live as conquerors, not constant condemners of self” (pg. 34, Battle Ready). We do not have to listen to and allow the enemy to speak lies to us because we are not perfect. Praise God for that! As you meditate on the many relevant scripture references that Battle Ready highlights, and ask God to open your heart to His Word and the truth that’s being revealed in the book about overcoming self harming areas in your life, get ready to be transformed, healed, delivered, and set free in Jesus name.
I’m so excited that you are choosing to open your heart to all that God is saying to you and to freely accept His love with open arms. Embrace the fact that God’s love is unconditional and that although you may not be perfect, our loving, perfect God, sees you as the apple of His eye. Be encouraged my friends and walk in your freedom.
Thank you Kelly for being a beacon of hope and light to so many of us women, and for having the courage to share from your personal experiences, but also sharing Gods truth. For those reading this article, if you haven’t done so already, I highly encourage you to order a copy of the book Battle Ready for yourself or give it as a gift to someone you know who could benefit from the powerful message.
